A little about H. Milward & Sons:

Based in Redditch, England and by the late 1800’s they became the largest manufacturer in their district. Small needle businesses combined, often through inter-marriage between the leading needle makers of Redditch. Henry Milward and sons combined with John James, W. Avery & Son, Wm. Bartlett, and thus the "Milward Empire” grew to become the largest producer of its type in the world.

About this needle case:

A circa 1868 Avery Quadruple Golden Casket lever case of which there are 18 different designs, this one is called “The Eclectic Needle case”. Avery would license the design to another company so they could put their name on his design but they would have to have a different type of front design - something that represented their company, in H. Milward & Sons case a bent arm with sword. In heraldry an arm in armor and bent at the elbow signifies a person with leadership skills, the sword signifies protection and strength. The case is also marked around the bent arm “by Royal Letters Patent". This is a solid brass case that has a lever mechanism on both sides to select the size needle, sizes 6 through 9 and is in smooth working order.
