A pair of late 18th century toile flamme or better known as ikat from France in appreciation of the flame-like color transitions in the finished textiles. A complicated and labor-intensive technique where the threads are dyed before weaving or known today as resist dyeing the warp threads and then manipulating them after they have been set up on the loom but before they are woven. Striped and checked toiles flamme were woven primarily in blue and white dyed linen and cotton in the 18th century as is this pair. Backed with 19th century French linen, finished around the edges with linen cord, the inserts are 100% down.

Condition: Excellent condition with aged softness.
