A rare circa 1700 French or Italian silk bizarre brocade with polychrome silk and silver metal threads on a red ground. Edged with an 18th silk and metal galon, finished with a 19th silver metal fringe, backed with red silk velvet. (3 available, patterns vary on front, galons vary on each pillow.)
During the period of time that “bizarre” fabrics were produced France was the undisputed leader of fashion. Unfortunately, due to Louis XIV’s wars unemployment and religious persecution drove many of the weavers into exile to other countries for work. This is why “bizarre” patterns are indifferently classified as French or Italian since it’s virtually impossible to tell which country produced them.
Condition: Excellent condition with patina from age
